Interview with Graham Penman

Can you please tell me a little bit about yourself?

I'm Graham, I’m from Glasgow originally and I’ve been working in payroll since I was 19. I’ve worked in large multi nationals to SMEs which I enjoy as I am able to build their payroll processes. That really is my niche.

What is your role with Applica?

It is international global payroll manager processing payments for contractors in the UK, Norway and the US. Payroll is pretty standard but I really enjoy the international aspect of the job and understanding the compliance in each country.

What do you really enjoy about your profession?

What I really enjoy about my profession is that it's never the same. It changes month for month year on year. That is down to things like tax rate changes, maternity pay, paternity pay, sick pay, everything can and does change; you have to make sure you keep very up to date on local laws and legislations, companies own specific policies around how they want to pay things and I really enjoy that.

Why did you choose to work with Applica?

The people stood out to me at Applica. During my interviews I got a good sense of who I would be working with and who I'd be working for. They seemed very driven, supportive and knowledgeable and that has also been my experience since working here.

I like their goals and I feel I coming in at a good time when the company is growing, it’s exciting and I feel that I have the opportunity to really make a difference, take ownership and add value.

Please tell me something not many people know about you.

When I was younger, I tried to be an actor. I auditioned for Star Wars and Game of Thrones. I used to go on quite a lot of auditions but it didn’t quite work out but I certainly gave it a good go!
